What is an Exercise Physiologist?

Exercise Physiologists are university qualified allied health professionals equipped with the knowledge, skills and competencies to design, deliver and evaluate safe and effective exercise interventions for people with acute, sub-acute or chronic medical conditions, injuries or disabilities.

Who can see an Arthritis ACT Exercise Physiologist?

You do not have to have arthritis to see one of our exercise physiologists because they specialise in treating all manner of pain conditions. Anyone looking for a safe, individually designed exercise program to treat a pain condition is welcome to see one of our exercise professionals.

What should I expect from my consultation?

  1. Initial Consultation: The Exercise Physiologist will work with you to understand your individual exercise goals.
  2. Physical Assessment: Gentle, physical assessments will be undertaken to determine your current exercise knowledge, exercise abilities, strengths and limitations.
  3. Personalised Exercise Program: Based on this information the Exercise Physiologist will create a safe, personal exercise program that will gently challenge and progress your physical abilities, helping you to lower your pain levels and increase your strength.
  4. Follow-Up Consultation: This will be with your exercise physiologist. It will be in one of our gyms (land based programs) or at one of our hydrotherapy sessions (hydrotherapy programs). During this session our exercise physiologists will take you through your personal program and teach you the exercises so that you are confident to complete them independently.

The goal of the consultation is to help you understand your condition and create an exercise program focused on improving physical function through targeted exercises.

Initial Consult

This is an office based appointment where we will discuss your medical history, your goals for improving your health and we may also do some basic tests to assess the best program for you.

Review Consult

This is an office based appointment where we may do some assessments of your strength and balance. We will also discuss increasing or changing your exercise routine and we may set new goals to strive towards.

Small Exercise Physiologist Class

This is a closely monitored class of around four people that allows you to gain the support you need to carry out your individually tailored exercise program, but also gives you some space to be independent.
